The story
On 1944-06-10, Pilot I W Smith (Flying Officer, RCAF) service number J/22244, flew Typhoon Ib serial MN464 (squadron code 5V-N) for this duty: armed recce. His mission was completed. Circumstances of the aircraft damage: Formation landing, live 500 lb bomb came off rack of wingman's aircraft and bounced end over end down runway striking starboard landing gear and tearing off wheel, aircraft ground looped. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 439. The location for the map is RAF station Hurn Hants. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Smith: he was unhurt. Aircraft was repaired.
