17 Field Company RE building Bailey Pontoon Bridge over the River Orne
Class 40 Bailey Pontoon Bridge over the River Orne near Benouville constructed by 1 Corps Troops Engineers.
This bridge was 358 ft long, consisting of a 100 ft landing bay, a 32 ft end floating bay, two 42 ft floating bays and one 110 ft landing bay. The width of the gap was 313 ft. Approaches were extensive. Sommerfield track was laid across a ploughed field from the main road but did not last long and was later covered with hardcore. 224ft Bailey Pontoon Class 40 Bridge over the Caen Canal.
Consisting of two 110ft T/S leading bays onto a type “D” pier with 10ft towers with one platoon of 17th Field Company R.E. and 263 Field Company R.E. under command 71st Field Company constructed nearside landing bay and 60ft D/S tail to allow launching of landing bay. Completed 8th June 1944
