10 The Highland Light Infantry house to house fighting
When Battalion H.Q. entered the village just before first light on the 15th, fighting was still going on from house to house, the tanks being dangerously menaced by "bazookas" from every corner, while well-sighted M.G.'s covered every lane of approach for the companies. "B" and" A " had to begin a bitter game of hide-and-seek, yard by yard, to clear their areas, and progress was slow.
At least six S.P. guns, each surrounded by a hardfighting squad of infantry with" bazookas" and machine-carbines, and numerous M.G.'s and riflemen hidden in houses formed the defence that we were trying to prise out of this village. Several plucky attempts were made to stalk the S.P. guns with PIAT's, taking a snap-shot from the door of a house on the other side of the road. The score was one probable, afterwards confirmed as put out of action. The tanks were quite unable to advance under these conditions, but the Scots Guards were not to be deprived of a battle and joined in the yard-by-yard struggle on foot with any weapon they could find.
