On the 20th September, the bridgehead was heavily shelled and mortared, but remained perfectly secure. That night, however, in accordance with higher strategy, the Brigade was withdrawn to the south of the canal. "A" Company remained forward to cover the road into GHEEL while the remainder of the Battalion returned to GHEEL.
