1st Polish Armoured Division second failed attempt to a German bridgehead
At this location at the Bergsche Maas was in 1944 a German bridgehead. Four attacks were made by Polish, British and Canadians forces.
The battle lasted for 5 weeks.
The first unsuccessful attack by the Polish 1st Armoured Division was in the night of December 30, 1944.
The second failed attack by the Polish 1st Armoured Division was in the night of January 6, 1945.
The third unsuccessful attack by British and Norwegians was in the night of January 13, 1945. The fourth attack by the 4th Canadian Armoured Division from was from January 26, 1945 until January 31, 1945. This attack succeeded, on January 31, 1945 the Germans withdrew. In total there were nearly 1200 soldiers killed during the four atta cks.
