I am researching this aircraft - AJ188- it contained my wife's great uncle - WOP/AG James Dunne, I cannot work out if it was shot down or a malfunction led it to crash into the sea, the Ventura was quite a difficult aircraft to fly in formation at low level. This was James and his crew's third mission. Only the pilot's body was recovered off of the Isle of Wight.

Would you be interested in corresponding with me on this, I have done a lot of research on 464 Squadron and Operation Oyster, the first 464 mission to Holland, really interested to hear more of your Father's experiences.

This was a Circus operation designed to bring out German fighters to be engaged by British fighters from 10 Group. The operation was led by W/Cdr Pritchard OC 21 Squadron. The second box, led by my father S/L Peter Billyeald, was 464 Squadron’s contribution to the operation. This aircraft, AJ188 SB-U was piloted by Sgt Powell and was shot down and crashed into the sea, all crew were lost. The other crew were Sgt Nodes (Navigator), Sgt Dunne (WOP/AG), Sgt Newton (AG). Another Ventura AE876 SB-N piloted by Sgt Pilkington was hit and returned on only his port engine; this aircraft crash landed on the Isle of Wight and all crew escaped serious injury.
