10 The Highland Light Infantry crossing the River LEINE at NEUSTADT
WUNSTORF was a pretty village in spite of the war having passed through it, but we did not have long to appreciate it, for a night" 0 " group and an early morning start-that most annoying of all features of a successful advance-set us off on the road for CELLE. At last the Division had taken over the lead again, and it was through as yet unsearched country that we advanced behind the Gordons on that morning of the 11th April. Our progress was unspectacular and slow, crossing the River LEINE at NEUSTADT, and crawling forward, village by village, while the Gordons in front mopped up small bodies of enemy who still wished to offer resistance. For us behind them, it was a day of long halts on the road-a God-send to the "brewers-up" of tea-watching the steady trickle past us of another hundred or so liberated slave workers in the most variegated assortment of clothing imaginable.
