Royal Scots Greys (2 Dragoons) to seize the smaller bridge
The Scots Greys found the main road bridge east of Longpre blown, but with great skill and dash they managed to seize the smaller bridge to the west before the enemy could destroy it.
They managed to get two troops over, but the bridge itself was weak and there was a wet crater in the road this side of it and while several attempts were made to improve it, but for most of the day the bridgehead in and around the village of Long (on the north side of the river) was held only by two troops of tanks and a company of a KRRC.
There were several fierce counter attacks, but every attempt by the enemy to get back to the bridge was foiled in spite of the thick country, and the rest of the Squadron had crossed over by nightfall.
