Peter Frehner: Re the write up on your website Back to Normandy regarding N E Frehner, Flight Sergeant 415409 of 485 New Zealand Spitfire Squadron and NOT 486 which I believe was a Typhoon New Zealand Squadron.
Yes!! He did bale out of his Spitfire into the channel on October 3rd 1943 but he certainly didn’t die!! How do I know this?? Allow me to introduce myself. Peter Frehner, 3rd son of Neville Ernest Frehner Born 21.3.1955. Here is the entry in his flight log book that he wrote after he returned to base; “Oct 3rd 1943 SPITFIRE IX OU-A ESCORT CREVECOURT BOSTONS 1:20 ENGINE QUIT ON WAY HOME. BALED OUT OVER CHANNEL. BLOODY COLD! PICKED UP 15 MILES S. OF DUNGENESS. WALRUS TO HAWKINGE”
He was flown back to his base the next day in a DH82. He also is mentioned in Kevin W Wells book about the Squadron to which he was attached.
