Flight of Spitfire Vb BL959 and Flying Officer B J Sawiak on 1942-08-23
On 1942-08-23, Pilot B J Sawiak (Flying Officer, PAF) with servicenumber P.0867 flew a Spitfire Vb with serial BL959 for this duty: Scramble. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: Seriously wounded during a fight with a marauding Ju.88's air gunner near Dublin at 08.34 hours. His Spitfire 'Black One' was riddled with bullets and a bullet had grazed his knee and gone through his elbow. Pilot managed to crash land his aircraft, making a wheels up landing in a large foeld two miles north of the village of Rathoath, Co. Meath, Eire, where it ended up in a ditch, completely wrecked. The pilot received multiple injuries in the crash landing and was covered in blood. He was taken to the house of the local doctor. where he was trated by Doctor Conway. The Pilot was later taken by military ambulance to St Bricin's Hospotal but he died on the way to hospital. On 25 August 1942 the Pilot's remains were taken, with military escort, to the Cross-Channel Steamer at Dun Laoghaire to be taken to England. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 315. The location for the map is English Channel, United Kingdom. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Sawiak: he was killed. He is commemorated at: Formby (Our Lady Of Compassion) Roman Catholic Churchyard Lancashire, United Kingdom.
