Correction and photo by Don Libbey: The pilot’s initials were O. E. not D. E. The pilot was #J38573 Flying Officer O.E. Libbey of the RCAF. His name was actually Oscar Elmore Athanasius LIBBEY. He was shot down and spent from 25 Aug 1944 to 19 Oct 1944 at STALAG LUFT I Barth, Germany. After the war, he returned to Canada and flew with the RCAF retiring as a Flight Lieutenant.
Flying Officer Libbey was born 30 Apr 1920 in Sydney, Nova Scotia to Oscar Elmore LIBBEY and Bridget Marie WOLFE. He married Ann Priscilla MCDOUGALL in 1955 and had 3 children. He died in St. John’s, Newfoundland 10 Oct 2004.
The above information was obtained from his obituary in the Cape Breton Post October 13, 2004 and by email to me from his brother, Howard Libbey, in 2011. He was a very distant cousin (7th) of mine. Thanks for all your work to commemorate our heroes!
