Avro Lancaster I (NN714 PO-W) on a mission to Harburg on 1944-11-12
On Saturday, 11 November 1944, (a part of) the aircraft of the 467 squadron (RAAF), took off for a mission to Harburg in Germany from a station (airfield) in or near Waddington.
One of the crew members was Flight Sergeant W L Houston RAAF. He departed for his mission at 16:18.
He flew with a Avro Lancaster (type I, with serial NN714 and code PO-W). His mission and of the other crew members was planned for Sunday, 12 November 1944.
Hallo, My name is Martin Brütt. I run a website that deals with the war events in my region of Cuxhaven in northern Germany. While working through a list of kills, I came across the Lancaster NN714, which was shot down over what is now the southern district of Cuxhaven. On that day, the Oste anti-aircraft battery set fire to a Lancaster with 24 10.5 cm rounds. The plane crashed a short time later north of Bremervörde. Furthermore, according to my information, a Lancaster crashed near Kührstedt on the same day. Kührstedt is about 20 kilometers from Bremervörde. Therefore I suspect that Lancaster NN714 was badly hit by flak from the Oste battery on November 11, 1944 and then crashed near Kührstedt. There was only one official report of an Avro Lancaster crash in the area that day. It's the only explanation that would make sense about the machine. I have attached an unfortunately not so good picture of the kill report.
Greetings Martin Brütt www.festungswerke-cuxhaven.de
