Flight of Typhoon Ib MP178 and Pilot Officer R F Breen on 1944-12-24
On 24 December 1944, Hawker Typhoon MP178 (squadron code F3-H) was lost during an armed recce mission. While straffing enemy ground vehicles, it was hit by flak at low altitude (below 600 feet) giving the pilot no chance to bail out, he perished in the crash. P/O Breen was posthumously awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre with palm. Belgian Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm (deceased) - No.438 Squadron - Awarded 17 July 1948 as per Canada Gazette of that date and AFRO 455/48 dated 23 July 1948.
