Flight of Typhoon Ib MN644 and Warrant Officer R A Watson on 1944-07-18
On 1944-07-18, Pilot R A Watson (Warrant Officer, RAF) with an unknown servicenumber, flew a Typhoon Ib with serial MN644 for this duty: Bombing. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: Richard Arthur "Dick" From Oba, Northern Ont. Trained at No.1 EFTS and No.14 SFTS Posted to O.T.U. at Tealing Served w/ 440 Sqn On 17 July 1944 flying Typhoon MN644, part of a raid by 13 a/c on mortar and german artillery, he is s/d by flak and bails out over Normandy. Hiding under an artillery duel, he eventually was found, and helped escort 120 Pows back to the rear. RTB On 1 Jan 1945 he taxies his Spitfire at Eindhoven at about 09:20 for take off. From the end of the runway he fires at the JG 3 attackers and damages one e/a; his own a/c is set on fire and he abandons it. After the war he established a tourism camp, then returned to flying. In 1992 he was flying tourists aboard a cessna 206 and owned an Otter and a Beaver from Pine Portage Lodge, Wawa, Ont - . This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 440. The location for the map is Mesnil Frementel, 14630 Cagny, France. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Watson: he died, but circumstances of death are unknown. There is no commemoration location known.
