Anne Gafiuk: p. 28, 29,32, 183 from Typhoon and Tempest by Hugh A. Halliday
Scambler earned his wings at Uplands. He served on both 183 and 198 Squadrons. He was part of the action on January 2, 1944 when 198 attacked two Luftwaffe dromes near Paris.
The group refueled at Manston “to achieve the deepest penetration, says Hugh Halliday, "then went looking for trouble. At 1505, they found it. 15 Bf.110s and Me.410s parked in a wood near Meulan. At least five were damaged by strafing. Next the CO shot up a locomotive; then the formation found a field with several Bu.131 biplanes apparently engaged in aerobatic training. The nimble targets proved hard to hit, but Scambler shared in destroying one. Flak drove the intruders away, but before leaving France, they engaged an Fw.190 which S/L Baldwin shot down.”
There are several possibilities in investigating the flight records on Back to Normandy. All the flights are plotted on maps, sorted day by day, by squadron, by type aircraft, by year or month, by location and much more! Don't miss this!!!
