Flight of Typhoon Ib JR238 and Flying Officer K W Sim on 1944-01-04
On 1944-01-04, Pilot K W Sim (Flying Officer, RAF) with an unknown servicenumber, flew a Typhoon Ib with serial JR238 for this duty: Ramrod. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: Took off from West Hamptnett 10.10hrs 04/01/44. Engine cut without warning approx 1 mile from French coast, crash-landed on mudflats between Ault and Cayeux.
Two nearby Frenchmen told him to hide in woods close by until dark. When dark, he was taken to Brutelles, next morning he was taken to Fruille-Escarbotin and stayed there until 29/01/44. Then taken by train to Abbeville, and then by car to Maison Ponthieu, on the 30th Jan, taken by foot to Gueschart and stayed on a farm until 11th Feb when he was taken by car to Amiens, picking up two US airmen ( Harms and Fruili) on the way. Stayed at Amiens until April 17th. Taken to Gibraltar and left for UK on June 5th 44. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 245. The location for the map is Ault, France. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Sim: he evaded. There is no commemoration location known.
