I am glad to be able to inform you that Brian Whitlock was not killed in this incident, indeed he lived to the age of 97, and died this year. I am his son. From his logbook I can shed some light on the matter:

On 12 Feb 44 Brian (with his navigator Barry Hull) was on an Instep patrol over Cape Ortegal (Biscay); he was one of three planes who shot down a FW200 Condor, then one of his engines packed up and he had to fly back to Predannack on one engine.

The Mosquito reference number in the post (HJ652) chimes with that given in the database ‘Mosquito fates’, which also confirms that the plane was written off. So it looks as though there was an unconfirmed report that the plane had been lost when in fact Brian made it home.

However, to complicate matters, the Mosquito Brian was flying that day was not HJ652 but DZ750. And to complicate matters still further, Brian did fly HJ652 on three occasions after the supposed loss referred to in the report!

It would be very good to get to the bottom of this. May I ask how you came across this false report about Brian's death?

Regards, Joe Whitlock Blundell
