222 Infantry Regiment (USA) clearing Wertheim

1945-04-01 · Wertheim · Germany

The story

The first objective of the 222nd Infantry was the capture of Wertheim. Moving with the 1st and 2nd Battalions abreast, the regiment shuttled with its motors until it nearly reached the city. There opposition stiffened and the troops dismounted and moved ahead. Although a Nazi rear guard force waged a short battle the troops had no difficulty in entering and clearing the town by 2100 on April 1. Both the 1st and 2nd Battalions then continued to advance on foot and the 3rd Battalion was motorized and directed to move rapidly northeast to join Task Force 1 of CCA of the 12th Armored Division in Hettstadt, a small town about five miles west of Wurzburg.
