The story

On Sunday 19 November 1944, a member of the 460 Sqdn, Flight Sergeant G B Byrne, took off from Binbrook in the United Kingdom. His mission is mentioned elsewhere on WW2 History Europe. He flew with a Avro Lancaster (type III, serial PB541, code AR-E2).

Campaign report of the USAAF:


(Ninth Air Force): 450+ A-20s, A-26s, and B-26s bomb storage depots, bridge, junction, ordnance depots, and defended positions in or near 10 German towns and cities; fighters escort the bombers, carry out patrols, and fly armed reconnaissance hitting rail facilities and other targets over W German areas including Euskirchen, Trier, Saarbrucken, Julich, and Cologne; the IX, XIX, and XXIX Tactical Air Commands support the US VII, XII, XIX, and XX Corps areas E of Aachen and near Hurtgen, Germany, between Metz, France and Saarlautern, Germany and near Sarreguemines, France.

In Belgium, HQ 366th Fighter Group moves from Couvron Airfield at Laon, France to Assche.



Campaign report of the RAF:


18/19 November 1944

Wanne-Eickel: 285 Lancasters and 24 Mosquitos of Nos 1 and 8 Groups. 1 Lancaster lost. The intention of the raid was to hit the local oil plant. Large explosions seemed to erupt in the plant and post-raid reconnaissance showed that some further damage was caused to it. The local report does not mention the oil plant but states that the Hannibal coal mine was destroyed.

31 Mosquitos to Wiesbaden (a 'spoof' raid), 21 to Hannover and 6 to Erfurt, 29 RCM sorties, 44 Mosquito patrols. No aircraft lost.
