Back to Normandy · Bomber Command missions day by day

Bomber Command raid - night of 21/22 June 1940

Antwerp · Belgium

The story

GERMANY
105 aircraft - 42 Hampdens, 33 Wellingtons, 30 Whitleys - attacked a wide range of targets in Northern Germany, the Ruhr and Central Germany. Schiphol airfield and Antwerp were also bombed. 1 Hampden and 1 Wellington lost.

---

AIRFIELDS
18 Blenheims bombed Merville airfield; 3 further Blenheims abandoned flights to Germany and bombed Schiphol airfield. No losses.

---

This was the first night without any Bomber Command raids since the opening of the German offensive in the West. There had been 44 continuous nights of operations but only rarely a 'maximum effort'. The night squadrons had not been as fully extended as the day squadrons and their casualty rate had been much lower (see statistics at end of section).
